Event Impact Check

IES-R (Impact of Event Scale — Revised)
⏱ 5–7 min 22 questions Free · Private

About this check

The IES-R is a 22-question scale that measures how much a specific distressing event is still affecting you in the past week. It covers three patterns: intrusion (unwanted memories and dreams), avoidance (trying not to think or feel), and hyperarousal (being on edge, easily startled).

Important: The IES-R is tied to a specific event you have in mind. It measures current reaction rather than diagnosing PTSD. Scores shift over weeks and months — a high score right after an event is very different from a high score a year later.

What your score means

Low impact · score 0–23

Your score is in the low range. The event is not, on this screen, still causing clinically significant distress over the past week.

Moderate impact · score 24–32

Your score is in the moderate range. The event is still affecting you more than you might like — intrusive memories, avoidance, or being on edge are present at a noticeable level.

High impact · score 33–88

Your score is in the high range that indicates partial-PTSD or probable PTSD in research samples. Event-related distress at this level tends not to resolve without support.

How it works

Think of a specific stressful or traumatic event. Over the past 7 days, how distressing has each of the following been for you, in relation to that event?

If you are in crisis: Please call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24/7, many Indian languages) or 112 for emergencies. You can also reach iCall, Vandrevala Foundation, or AASRA.
